Tooth Extraction in Hamilton, OH

If our dentist at David Kirkpatrick DDS, recommends tooth extraction, it’s usually because your tooth is too severely damaged to repair with a restoration like a filling or crown. An infection in the tooth pulp can also require removal, so the infection doesn’t spread further or become systemic. Additionally, wisdom teeth that don’t have enough room to erupt completely can push neighboring teeth or grow at an angle, leading to misalignment of your bite and jaw problems. Even wisdom teeth that are still intact can cause pain and other issues.

How Is a Dental Extraction Performed?

First, our dentist will typically administer local anesthesia to numb the tooth area. This helps alleviate any discomfort you may feel during the procedure, with no pain, only pressure. Our dentist will then make a small incision in the gum tissue to gain access to the tooth’s root. After removing a small amount of tissue around the top portion of the tooth and the underlying bone, our dentist will be able to remove the tooth entirely from the socket.

In some cases, a tooth may be too damaged to extract in one piece; in those cases, our dentist can extract it in sections. Once the procedure is completed, you will be provided with aftercare instructions that may include how to minimize any swelling or manage any pain. You will also be advised to avoid blood thinners and smoking for at least 24 hours following the treatment to ensure no risk of excessive bleeding.

The Advantages of Dental Extractions

Removing a tooth is typically a last resort, but in some cases, it is essential to preserve the health of the neighboring teeth, gums, and supporting bone. Some teeth may be so decayed that they can no longer be saved through other treatments such as fillings or crowns. Extracting wisdom teeth often improves oral health by eliminating problems that can damage your gums, teeth, and jawbone. Without removal, impacted teeth can cause pain, damage to the gums, misalignment of the bite, bone loss, and damage to nearby teeth and nerves.

Extractions can also help improve your appearance by removing teeth that are too long, too small, or too crowded. Tooth extraction can make your face appear slimmer and more balanced and highlight all your features.

Tooth extractions are sometimes necessary when a tooth is damaged beyond repair or impacted. To learn more about tooth extractions, contact David Kirkpatrick DDS at (513) 868-3600 or visit us at 870 NW Washington Blvd Suite A, Hamilton, OH 45013.
